Kwame Yirenkyi laid to rest

The memorial service and burial rites for one of the earliest Ghanaians in Stockholm were held at Skogskyrkogården on Wednesday 30th September. Kwame Nana Yirenkyi Awuku passed away on September 2nd. He was one of the first Ghanaians to come to Stockholm. It was in the 60s and there were not many black men around. Kwame was a musician who became a well known keeper of bees. Despite his long stay outside Ghana, he maintained strong links to his cultural roots. This is best seen in his strict adherence to the maintenance of our name culture something that he demonstrated by giving all his children very Ghanaian names. Kwame was 79 and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Ingrid Awuku, his three children - Kwesi Manukure, Kofi Nii Bokoe and Afua Ohene and four grandchildren. Suberu Salaam and Enoch Ablorh, both friends who knew him since several years back, represented Ghana Union at the memorial service and Agoroma drummed to his memory.
