DLink project - accounts credited in Ghana
The remittance pilot project has made remittances to Ghana in a first effort to see how the project works. Ten members of GUSS have sent amounts in various currencies to Visa account holders at different banks in Ghana. Those members who could not get account holders in Ghana were made to remit to the Swedish accounts of other members of the pilot group. To monitor the project, members were made to fill in
questionnaires asking for such information as amounts sent, difficulty of sending, or times recorded for the transactions. Remitters were also to provide information from the recipients as to how much was received, the currencies in which the accounts were credited and especially how long it took them to have their accounts credited.
Some recipients are reporting back from Ghana. Many of them don’t seem to be particular about the detailed information that is required from them. Some only report that the money has arrived without even saying exactly how much they received. Some have to travel to a few banks before seeing that their accounts have been credited.
The process was a bit confusing at first especially for those not used to computers. But after a, members got better at using the system. Union members helped each other to make the remittances.
Pilot group members, Micah Kissi and Bab Ibrahim-Nabigah, are preparing to attend a seminar at Jonkoping in May where they will talk about the project.
