Ghana Union joins Forum Syd: Ghana Union was one of 14 organisations admitted to Forum Syd at its annual general anuual meeting held over the weekend. This brings to 199 the member organisations of this umbrella organ that distributes Swedish aid funds to third world countries. The meeting re-elected Joe Frans as chairman of the board for another year. A strongly worded letter was approved to be sent to the new Swedish minister for development aid, Gunilla Carlson, protesting against the government's cut in funds to SIDA which provides the money Forum Syd dispenses. Forum Syd feels the cut will weaken people based organisations and urged the government to rather increase support for these organisations that work at increasing the democratisation process and uprooting poverty in the third world. Union President, Micah Kissi, and Treasurer, Nuru Allotey, represented the union at the meeting. Two representatives of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS), William Yeboah, current president, and Sam Sika Adjei-Fordjour, the outgoing International Relations Secretary, were in Stockholm last month at the invitation of Landsrådet för Sveriges ungdomsorganisationer (LSU). The NUGS has worked together with LSU over the years on projects aimed at enhancing gender empowerment and the reduction of poverty. NUGS will also like to cooperate with Ghana Union, Stor-Stockholm, in the achievements of these and other goals. The president of the Ghana Union, Micah Kissi, met the two delegates and had fruitful discussions with them. The two representatives who have since returned to Ghana, were very satisfied with their visit and expressed appreciation for the work of the Ghana Union in Stockholm.
